The testing of intelligence began in France in 1904 when psychologist Alfred Binet was appointed by French government to discover a method to distinguish between intellectually normal children and those inferior. The purpose was to put the latter of the two groups into special schools where they received individual attention and the disruption that they caused in normal school could be avoided. This discovery led to the Binet scale in which the test had children copy patterns, follow commands, name objects and arrange things in proper order. Following the work of Binet, the phrase IQ or 'intelligence quotient' was formed.

Today's IQ test is a questionnaire or group of exercises used to measure intelligence. The goal is to obtain a person's intellectual potential. There are various types of these tests that measure learning or ability in many different skills and areas. The scores from the test may be represented on a scale, as a mental age or as an intelligence quotient (IQ). This test is usually given as part of a group of tests.

When performing an IQ test, the applicant can expect many different tasks, including answering questions, calculating mathematical problems and performing tasks using eye-hand coordination. Some tasks are timed and require one to work very quickly. Most tasks of the test start out easy and progressively become more challenging. It is most uncommon for anyone to know the answers to all the questions or even able to complete all the questions.

The four most common IQ test are: 1. Wechsler-Adult Intelligence Scale 2. Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales 3. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children 4. Wechsler Primary & Preschool Scale of Intelligence

The IQ test is an assessment of one's ability to both think and reason. The score of the test is a way of comparing people of the very same age. If someone has a score of 100, this means that when compared to people of the same age, he or she has an average intelligence. Psychologists say that a score between 95 and 105 is normal or average IQ. An actual IQ score may vary by five points because it can be very difficult to get a completely accurate score with there being so many outside factors that affect the score.

In general, an IQ test measures many types of human behaviors better than most other intelligence tests that have been created. This test provides a uniform way of comparing performances of people similar in age.
