Football apparel has long been known for its unique styles and colors. Football shirts in particular can provide the common man with several colorful options over the span of a season. Some fashion designers have taken the idea a bit further than your typical replica jersey, however. Siobhan Dillon, a freelance designer, has created a fashion line based on the colors, logos, and shirt elements of the West Ham football club. Her creations have been seen on famous celebrities this fall, to mixed reviews. Is it Fashion?
The new clothing designs give an interesting twist to the idea of football apparel. Fans have long been able to purchase replica football shirts, or t-shirts that contained elements of the uniforms from different popular teams. But this is the first time that official badges and logos have appeared as part of red carpet fashion. Dillon's designs were worn on an international stage when singer Katy Perry chose to don the football fashions when she hosted the MTV Music Awards. Several eye-catching designs probably kept any football fan's attention throughout the show, whether he was a music fan or not. Football Gone Glam
Dillon said that her inspiration for the football apparel line came from some football kits that West Ham sent to her. She began by dismantling the shirts, then reassembled them into a more feminine form. One of the most interesting designs included a corset covered in the West Ham checkerboard pattern, with two logo patches on the front. The football collar was sewn across the top of the corset. Some strategically placed light blue ruffle lace trimmed out the design and made it a little more girly. Will it Catch on?
The Dillon West Ham football apparel line will be available to the general public in a limited release. There is a good chance that many girlfriends of football fans may find these hot little numbers in special boxes at Christmas or birthday time this season. Whether the girls will be as excited to wear them as the boys are excited to see them remains to be seen. The designs certainly add a bit of whimsy and spunk to the otherwise predictable fashion scene, with their boyish logos and echoes of the football pitch among the coats and ties. The bright colors and patterns of football kits do lend themselves to interesting fashion designs. Teams Getting Into It
West Ham isn't the only club offering its football apparel to the fashion industry. FC Barcelona has released its own line of fashion-forward football designs. Not quite red carpet fares, these clothing items are still not what you would expect to find on a typical football site. From FC Barcelona-themed lingerie to brightly colored button down oxford shirts, the discerning fan can find a way to wear their team pride even if they need to be dressed a little more upscale. Of course, the traditional t-shirts and replicas are available for those days when you get to watch the game.
